June's Teaching Moment
Many good Catholics casually say, “O my God,” using the divine name without purpose. While some people may think this sounds extreme, it is a clear example of what it means to take God's name in vain. In vain means calling out Jesus or God in a way that does not show Him reverence or respect.
Names matter, and the name of God matters the most and has so much power for good. Yet where is the outrage against treating God’s name so poorly?
We must all stop taking God’s name in vain. All our words are heard in Heaven and must be accounted for. When you hear God’s name taken in vain, we can say aloud, “Blessed be His Holy Name.” Give comfort to God by speaking His name in reverence and with love. Nothing can compete with the sweetness of uttering the name of God, with love, which brings Him into our presence and which blesses us abundantly.
Carolina Catholic learns about North Carolina's Care for Women, Children, & Families Act (SB20)
For our second show in June, Carolina Catholic will talk about North Carolina's Senate Bill 20 or the Care for Women, Children, and Families Act that will become law on July 1, 2023, which restricts the majority of abortions after 12 weeks. North Carolina had a law that allowed abortions up to 20 weeks, but after the SCOTUS' decision in Dobbs v. Jackson, the issue of abortion regulation was returned to the states, and our legislature passed this law to limit abortions to 12 weeks while providing millions to families to assist women with childcare, daycare, paid family leave, etc. Tara Lewis and I will discuss both the Dobbs' decision and SB20 with the state president of North Carolina Right to Life, Dr. Bill Pincus.
This show will air on Wilmington Catholic Radio's three stations, 91.7 FM, 93.1 FM, and 103.1 FM on Saturdays at 11 am and Sundays at 6 pm on the third and fourth weekends of June. You can listen on-line live by clicking on the Listen Now tab. Or, listen 24/7 by going to the Carolina Catholic tab and clicking on the show page.

For our first show in June, Carolina Catholic will honor the memory of our beloved Pope Benedict XVI as he is remembered by several who knew him or met him including these guests: Father Joseph Fessio, SJ, founder of Ignatius Press, who got his doctorate under the tutelage of then theologian and professor, Father Joseph Ratzinger; John Sonnen, Catholic pilgrimage guide, who met Pope Benedict eight times when John lived in Rome; St. Stan's parishioner, Ludi Lipari, who on a 2006 pilgrimage with St. Mary's with her husband, Charlie, had a special encounter with Pope Benedict; and Amanda Gandolf, St. Therese parishioner, who met him with her husband and her children. In 2023, Ignatius Press released a photo album called, Benedict XVI: Servant of Love, in honor of Pope Benedict. Photos of those who saw Pope Benedict in person will be on our webpage.

Carolina Catholic chats with Catholic pilgrimage guide extraordinaire, John Sonnen
For our second show in May, Carolina Catholic will get you ready to take a Catholic pilgrimage! The world has reopened to us, and a Catholic pilgrimage is the best way to travel while deepening our faith. Our guest, John Sonnen, has been in the Catholic pilgrimage business since 2004, and he is now presenting pilgrimages for both St. Charles Pilgrimages and Regina Magazine and its pilgrimages. In 2010, Judi Paparozzi met John Sonnen who gave her group the most phenomenal and informative tour on Rome ever. The pilgrimages John is offering include the Holy Land, Italy, Poland, France, Ireland, and other destinations. A priest is on every tour, and there is daily Mass as well. If you have ever dreamed of taking a pilgrimage, now is the time!
